Reshaping the Earth
Topic of your Task: Constructive and Destructive Forces: Weathering and Erosion
Essential Question: How do constructive and destructive forces shape and reshape the earth's surface?
Time Frame: 2 days
SC Science Standards: 5.3.1: Explain how natural processes (including weather, erosion, deposition, landslides, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and floods) affect Earth's oceans and land in constructive and destructive ways.
CCR Standards: Reading Anchor Standards 1 & 9, Writing Anchor Standards 1, 4, 6 & 8
Your assignment: Imagine that you are a geologist and you have been invited to speak to a group of fifth graders about some natural processes that affect the Earth's oceans and land: weathering and erosion. After reading, looking at a short video, and taking notes, write a speech that explains how weathering and erosion can reshape the Earth's surface.
Steps you will be following: In order to plan and write your speech, you will do all of the following:
1) Read the short introduction, Natural Forces on the Earth: An Introduction, watch the video, Study Jams, read the article about weathering and erosion, and take dash notes on all of these. All of these are on the landforms resources page. There is also a link to a National Geographic website that shows lots of pictures and examples of weathering and erosion.
2) Organize your information, plan, and write your speech. You may open a word document to write your speech, or just write it on a piece of paper. Your teacher will decide which will work best.
3) You will want to refer to your notes while writing your speech. You can re-read the articles and re-watch the video as often as you need to.
